Introduction:

Wenzhou University, which was founded by merging Wenzhou Normal College with Wenzhou University (former) with the approval of the ministry of Education, has a history of 75 years. The university is located in Wenzhou City of Zhejiang Province, a city with beautiful scenery and developed economy. Its main campus is situated in Wenzhou Higher Education Zone, and ideal place for study because of its wonderful environment.

The university is composed of 18 schools and two independent colleges, with a total full-time enrollment of 28,970 and 2,280 faculty members including 1,422 professional teachers, of whom 187 are full professors, 377 are associate professors, 185 are tutors of master and Ph.D. students, 201 are pace-setters of academy and technology in Wenzhou or Zhejiang Province.In order to survive and develop in the fierce competition, the university attaches great importance to quality and skill, employment, and entrepreneurship education, aimed at training talents with expertise, ability, creativity, and entrepreneurship.

The university sets its programs in accordance with the demands of the market, thus making them more flexible and dynamic in talents training. Currently, there are 48undergraduate programs, which fall under 27 primary disciplines and encompass 8 academic categories, including economics, law, education, literature, history, sciences, engineering, and management. Of these programs, one is in the list of national programs with distinct features, eight are of provincial key programs, two are of municipal key programs, and fifteen are of the university’s key programs.

At present, the university has 4 provincial key disciplines. Besides, 5 disciplines are placed in the list of top priorities and 13 in the list of key disciplines by the university. Authorized by the government, it offers 20 master programs and has the power to evaluate the title of associate professor in 19 disciplines.

There are 49 research institutes, 28 labs and centers, and one provincial platform for scientific and technological innovation in the university. Among them, one is in the list of provincial key labs, and four in the list of municipal key labs. In the past three years, the university has undertaken 28 national projects, including National Key Development Projects (known as “973”projects) and High-technology Projects (known as “863” projects), seven liberal arts and social sciences projects sponsored by the Ministry of Education, 105 provincial projects in technology development, social sciences and natural sciences. It has made great achievements in scientific research, including 136 academic works, 278 papers published in first-ranking academic journals and 8 patents. Its papers have been listed in influential citation indexes such as SCI for 639 times. The expenditure on scientific research has increased on yearly basis, reaching 41,760,000RMB in 2007. Since the beginning of the 10th Five-Year Plan, it has won 21 prizes in scientific achievements at province and ministry levels, including provincial first prizes in social sciences and provincial second prizes in technological advancement.

The university has exchanges and cooperative relationships with many universities in more than ten countries and regions, including America, Britain, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Russia, Australia, Hong Kong, and so on. Besides, it has cooperated with Burapha University of Thailand in the establishment of Confucius Institute. In the past three years, under the sponsorship of the university, 89 teachers have been able to give lectures, receive further education, do investigation or attend international academic conferences abroad; 219 overseas experts and scholars have visited the university for the purposes of lecture, investigation or cooperation in research. The university has been authorized to enroll overseas students, including those from Hong Kong and Macao. It is also one of the first bases approved by the Office for Overseas Chinese Affairs under the State Council to provide Chinese culture education.

The university attaches great importance to the development of students’ creativity and general qualities by encouraging them to study interdisciplinary courses and cultivate their independent personality, and providing them with opportunities to obtain both systematic knowledge and practical experience.
